The following quote was taken from an editorial titled "Greenies Leave U.S. to Beg for Oil" by San Francisco Chronicle columnist Debra Saunders.
"If Americans really want to protect the planet, then they should want to expand drilling in America where they know operations will be highly regulated."
Guess where she is in favor of drilling? The Alaskan Arctic National Wildlife Refuge.
I was spluttering and fuming at the absurdity of such a statment. When are people going to wake up and realize that extracting every last drop out of the earth, at great cost to wildlife I might add, isn't the answer?? If Americans care about protecting the planet they will:
*Live closer to work
*Develop EFFICIENT mass transit systems
*Purchase more fuel-efficient vehicles
*Stop pouring pounds and pounds of petroleum-based chemicals on their lawns in pursuit of perfection
*Support, in fact, demand that their local utility company invest in wind and solar power
Those are the biggies...on a smaller scale:
*Use canvas bags...every plastic bag you bring home represents a depletion of oil
*STOP buying bottled water...every bottle represents a depletion of oil
*Think about the way something is packaged...if it is over-packaged don't buy it (toys are notorious for being over-packaged)
*Use an eco-friendly dry cleaner...or don't dry clean at all
The list could go on and on. The bottom line is the only thing drilling in the ANWR will do is possibly lower fuel prices slightly...a couple of years from now. But at the rate we are going we will be shipping most of it to China to be the base for the manufacture of yet more plastic crap!
